Key points:

Post BREXIT key sectors of the UK economy can instantly benefit from China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). The sectors identified at seminar included finance, insurance, legal, education, free economic zones & motorways management, skills training, international communications and management, and community infrastructure development & engagement.

Presently CPEC projects require experts businesses from these sectors to participate in the various projects on offer.

Latest estimates put CPEC a platform valued over £50b and projects are being developed all across Pakistan.

Security and economic situation has improved in Pakistan and MSCI has upgraded Pakistan from frontier market index to its Emerging market index

Liz McInnes MP Chair of the seminar announced the formation of the ‘CPEC UK Working Group’ which is an industry led group. It will provide support and advice to the UK businesses which are interested in engaging with the CPEC projects.

Liz McInnes MP and Shadow Minister, Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, announced the formation of the CPEC UK Working Group at a seminar hosted in the House of Commons in UK on 12th September 2017 entitled .CPEC economic opportunities for Pakistan and the UK. The CPEC UK Working Group will advise and guide British businesses who want to understand and invest in CPEC projects.


Henry Tillman, Founder Grisons Peak Asian Focused Merchant Bank, said that the CPEC corridor provides huge cost savings for Chinese imports and exports and this alone is an important aspect which will make Pakistan and China cooperate and make CPEC a success


Aftab Siddiqui, Senior Analyst on South Asia & Director Innovalue Consult, a UK based consultancy firm, said that the UK finance and legal sector contributes more than 7% to the UK economy. After Brexit this sector could benefit by actively participating in CPEC projects. He also said that the Chinese Government should take undertakings from all concerned that no corruption will be tolerated in the CPEC projects. These projects provide us a golden opportunity to get rid of corruption in the society. He also pointed out that the returns from CPEC projects are substantially higher than the returns being offered to investors in the UK & the rest of the developed world. These returns are further secured by the sovereign guarantees.


Due to the decades old close cultural and economic relationship between the two countries. Investors from the UK can benefit from participating in the CPEC projects. Pakistan will play a key role in bringing economic Asia and economic Europe together for an integration from which all communities of the world will benefit.

Pakistan opened up its doors for foreign investment long time back and is home to some leading multinationals that have added value to market capitalization of exchanges. He further reiterated that the security situation in the country has improved remarkably and all socio economic indicators of Pakistan are improving. Recently, Morgan Stanley Capital International (MSCI) Index has promoted Pakistan from Frontier Markets to Emerging Markets classification,Shao Zheng of the Chinese Embassy UK also spoke at the event and reiterated support for Pakistan and the CPEC projects.


Mr. Ghulam Nabi Memon Minister Coordination High Commission of Pakistan also shared his views and highlighted that UK & Pakistan can both benefit from CPEC he emphasized that Pakistan is an open society with a vibrant media which help to identify strengths and weakness across the society and helps us to improve further.


The seminar was hosted at the House of Commons UK and was well attended by Chinese and Pakistani businessmen as well as a number of British MPs including Afzal Khan MP, Faisal Rashid MP, Kevin Hollinrake MP, Chaudhary Imran Hussain MP, Matt Rodda MP, Mohammad Yasin MP. The seminar was hosted by Liz McInnes MP.


Conclusion:

All the delegates at the seminar were of the opinion that ‘CPEC’ and the ‘One Belt One Road’ projects provide great potential where Economic Asia & Economic Europe can integrate and China, Pakistan & UK can play a key role in this global integration.
